MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A Turkish police officer and a soldier were killed on Friday in clashes with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the southeastern province of Sirnak, while a bomb attack attributed to PKK in the Diyarbakir province has claimed the life of another officer, the Turkish General Staff said.

Earlier in the day, a soldier came under rocket fire in the district of Cizre, Sirnak province, the army said on its website.

At least five police officers were wounded during clashes with the PKK in the same district and sent to Cizre State Hospital for treatment, the Turkish General Staff’s statement read.

Moreover, a total of 12 PKK militants were killed in an ongoing military operation bringing the total of the party’s members and supports "eliminated" during anti-PKK campaign conducted in Cizre since December 14, 2015 to 173.

Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast region has recently seen renewed violence between the Turkish government forces and the PKK since mid-summer breakdown of a two-year peace process.

In July, Ankara initiated a military operation against the PKK in response to the escalation of terrorist attacks in southern Turkey.
