Severe Weather to Cause Airline Delays in US on Christmas

US Federal Aviation Administration announced that thunderstorms and low clouds around the United States are expected to cause airline delays during the busiest travel period of the year.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Thunderstorms and low clouds around the United States are expected to cause airline delays during the busiest travel period of the year, the US Federal Aviation Administration announced in a statement on Thursday.

"Stormy weather with dense fog" would likely cause airline delays in the Gulf Coast region, including in Houston and New Orleans, as well as throughout the East Coast, including in New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Washington, DC, the statement said.

Delays are expected because of "low clouds, thunderstorms and associated turbulence," it added.

The Federal Aviation Administration also said that storms west of Atlanta could cause some airline arrivals to be rerouted.

Earlier on Thursday, the US National Weather Service said that severe weather in the southern United States had killed at least seven people and injured dozens of others.

The National Weather Service also warned residents in Mid-Atlantic states and the Gulf of Mexico to expect isolated severe thunderstorms, with a more concentrated threat across parts of the states of Alabama and Georgia.
