UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Safronkov expressed concern that militants were continuously provided with weapons through cross border points in Syria used for "targets that have nothing to do with humanitarian issues" but where the United Nations was at work.
"We regret that during the agreement on the resolution adopted certain timely, in our view provisions were not taken on board. The Russian delegation recommended the distribution of a UN mechanism for humanitarian monitoring, established through UN Security Council resolution 2165, on all cargo going to Syria and declared as humanitarian," Safronkov told the Security Council after Tuesday's vote on the resolution.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the government fighting several opposition factions and militant groups, including Daesh, outlawed in Russia and a number of other countries.
A total of 4.2 million Syrians have fled the country due to the ongoing conflict, according to UN data, while 13.5 million people are in need of aid and some form of protection, including more than 6 million children.
