Erdogan Lashes Out at Lawmaker for Revealing Turkey-Sarin-Daesh Cover-Up
16:01 GMT 23.12.2015 (Updated: 16:02 GMT 23.12.2015) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday called an opposition lawmaker a "traitor," for his revelations to a Russian media outlet about alleged deliveries of the materials necessary in the production of the deadly sarin gas to Syria via Turkey.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Speaking to village and neighborhood administrators on Monday, Erdogan also condemned the leader of the country's main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kilidaroglu, accusing him of "following the same path" as his party member, as quoted by Today's Zaman newspaper.
14 December 2015, 07:00 GMT
On December 14, CHP member Eren Erdem said in an interview with the broadcaster RT that chemical weapon materials for the production of sarin gas had been delivered to the Daesh (Islamic State) terrorist group in Syria via Turkey in 2013. According to Erdem, the Turkish authorities knew about these supplies.
After the interview with RT the Turkish authorities launched a treason investigation against the opposition lawmaker.
Sarin is a lethal gas, classified by the United Nations Resolution 687 as a weapon of mass destruction and banned by the UN Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. Following a number of sarin attacks carried out by the Syrian government on the country's civilian population, all the precursor chemicals for sarin gas were removed from Syria in 2014.
Daesh is a terrorist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries.
