Forty-three percent of US citizens consider the US offer to accept 100,000 refugees a year by 2017 excessive, a new poll conducted by Populus exclusively for Sputnik revealed Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US Secretary of State John Kerry said in September that Washington had agreed to bring the overall refugee admissions ceiling to 85,000 in 2016 and 100,000 in 2017, up from the current cap of 70,000.

Respondents chose the answer describing the US authorities' pledge as "more than they should have offered" most often. Another 42 percent of those polled are confident that the US contribution to the settlement of the international migration crisis is sufficient.

Only 15 percent said that the United States could have offered to receive more refugees.

The survey was conducted between September 25 and October 15 and involved some 1,000 respondents.

The international public opinion project Sputnik.Polls came into being in January 2015, in partnership with Populus, a founding member of the British Polling Council. The project involves regular surveys in the United States and Europe on high-profile social and political issues.
