Afghanistan Foils Terror Plot Coinciding With Indian Leader’s First Visit

Afghan intelligence services have thwarted a terrorist attack coinciding with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit this week, government sources told Indian media on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security foiled a December 25 suicide bombing at the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, 70 miles east of Kabul, the sources told The Indian Express newspaper.

The alleged assailant was identified as a religious studies student from the Afghan region of Kapisa halfway between Kabul and Jalalabad.

Qari Nasir, whose age was not provided, was alleged to have claimed in statements to authorities he had trained in a camp in Pakistan and received final instructions at a Taliban facility in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, 26 miles east of the Afghan border.

The foiled attack was said to have been planned by groups linked to Taliban leader Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, who is alleged to have close ties with Pakistan’s intelligence services.

Modi will visit the Afghan capital for the first time on Friday, after a two-day trip to Moscow, Russia.
