New passports, referring to the State of Palestine, will be issued within a year, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — On Monday, Abbas held meetings with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, during which the Greek leaders emphasized the necessity of creation of a viable, independent Palestinian State within 1967 borders and the capital in East Jerusalem.

"Regarding the issue of a passport, referring to the State of Palestine, it is now necessary to…start issuing new passports. It can be done within a year, or perhaps earlier," Abbas told journalists after the meeting with the Greek prime minister.

On Tuesday, Abbas is scheduled to address the Greek Parliament, which is expected to vote in favor of recognizing the state of Palestine within 1967 borders.

Palestinians seek recognition of their independent state on the territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which were seized by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.
