Canada to Increase Number of Military Trainers in Iraq – Prime Minister
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Sajjan is currently on a surprise visit to the Middle Eastern country and has met his counterpart Khaled Obeidi as well as several high-ranking Kurdish officials.

"During our meeting we discussed the security issues and the operation on the ground, and found the points in which Canada can play a role, as a partner in the international effort. And from our participation we will have a more active role on the ground in these operations for a better future for Iraq," Sajjan told reporters Sunday as quoted by the CBC corporation.

Canada's CF-18 fighter jets currently take part in the air combat mission of a US-led international coalition against the Islamic State (Daesh) militant group, which is outlawed in many countries including Russia. The country has also deployed about 70 special forces troops to train Kurds in northern Iraq in 2014.

New Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that all Canadian aircraft will be withdrawn from the conflict by March 31, 2016.
