The newly-organized counterterrorism coalition led by Saudi Arabia would be a better initiative if Riyadh did not support terrorism, the secretary of Syria’s National Democratic Action Committee told Sputnik on Tuesday.

Jihadist Fighters Build New Coalition Amid Syrian Army Success
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, local media reported that Saudi Arabia had set up a 34-member Islamic coalition to counteract terrorism.

"It would be better if Saudi Arabia stops to support terrorist groups including those in Syria. It would be a better initiative. As an opposition we want to urge Saudi Arabia and other members to contribute in finding ways for a political solution in Syria," Mais El Krydee said.

"We support any efforts to combat terrorism but we want to ask what is a true goal behind this proposition and if it will be effective," the opposition member said.

Besides Saudi Arabia, the alliance includes Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Turkey, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, Djibouti, Senegal, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Gabon, Somalia, Guinea, the Palestinian National Authority, the Union of the Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Maldives, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly accused of funding terrorism, both by countries in the region and some Western lawmakers.
