Beijing Confirms First-Ever Meeting of China's and Taiwan's Leaders
BEIJING (Sputnik) — China opposes US plans to sell two guided missile frigates to Taiwan and calls on the US side to stop arms supply to the island nation, China’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

On Monday, media reported, citing US congressional sources, that the Obama administration was expected to approve the sale by the end of the week.

"The Chinese side strongly opposes the US sales of weaponry to Taiwan… We are calling to the US side to stick to its obligations and terminate arms supply to Taiwan," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said a briefing.

He stressed that arms supply to Taiwan was an involvement of Washington into internal affairs of China, and could damage US-China relations.

In 1949, the Chinese Nationalist government was defeated by the Communists and had to flee from China to Taiwan, where it formed a separate government.

Since then, the relations between China and Taiwan have been strained, as China yet refuses to recognize Taiwan as a separate and independent political and diplomatic entity.
