Representatives of Libya's political forces could form a national unity government before Christmas, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Monday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Rome hosted an international conference on the settlement of the Libyan conflict, where the negotiators called on Libya’s rival governments to accept an “immediate” ceasefire and prepare to form a national unity government.

“I think, there are good chances that the opposition groups and the coalitions present in Rome yesterday, will be able to sign the agreement before Christmas,” Steinmeier told journalists before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

On December 12, the parties to the Libyan conflict agreed to sign a deal on the establishment of a national unity government on December 16.

Libya has been in turmoil since 2011, when long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown by protesters. There are two governments in the country: an internationally recognized government in Tubruk, and a self-proclaimed government in the former capital of Tripoli.
