The adoption of the Paris climate agreement is just the first step and much more work is now required to save the world, Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo said Saturday.

PARIS (Sputnik) — According to him, a yawning gap in the deal can be bridged by clean technology.

"Today the human race has joined in a common cause, but it’s what happens after this conference that really matters. The Paris Agreement is only one step on long a road, and there are parts of it that frustrate and disappoint me, but it is progress. This deal alone won’t dig us out the hole we’re in, but it makes the sides less steep," Naidoo said.

On Saturday, nearly 200 negotiators agreed to curb emissions beyond 2020 and fuel the transition toward a clean energy world economy after two weeks of tough negotiations marked by disagreement between rich and poor countries.

The 31-page pact commits countries to hold global average temperatures to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius (35.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels and urges them to "pursue efforts" to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
