To solve the refugee crisis and tackle Islamic fundamentalism, the United States and European Union must mend their differences with Russia, politicians said at the RT conference in Moscow.

To strengthen cooperation against terrorism Western countries have to negotiate with Russia to resolve the Syrian crisis, London ex-Mayor Ken Livingstone said at Thursday's RT conference in Moscow.

Livingstone noted that Russia is being presented as a threat to the Baltic states and Ukraine, but issues of discrimination against Russian-speakers in the Baltic states are being ignored. According to the politician, the issue Europe faces is the threat of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East.

"Today we are beginning to see in the US an understanding of the necessity of cooperation with Iran and Russia," Livingstone was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying, in comments translated into Russian.

Former Czech Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda also emphasized the need for cooperation, saying that the focus of diplomatic efforts should be the rebirth of the spirit of the Dayton Agreements, which put an end to the conflict in former Yugoslavia.

According to Svoboda, compromise with Russia is needed to end the war in Syria and put an end to the refugee crisis. Finding such a compromise would be a test for European and US diplomacy, according to Svoboda.
