PARIS (Sputnik) — According to the WEC chief, the fossil fuels will make up from 59 to 77 percent of the energy mix compared with the current 79 percent.
"The Council believes it is a myth that renewable energy will be sufficient to meet future energy demand," Marie-Jose Nadeau said at the COP21 Sustainable Innovation Forum.
The UN-accredited global energy body's chief suggested that the energy demand would be increasing dramatically, eventually exceeding supply.
"Fifty percent of this will happen in Asia, and approximately 50 percent in Africa and in the Middle East. Demand will continue to increase due to the growth in emerging economies. It is even expected that demand for electricity will even double by 2050."
Given the current path, the 2-degree Celsius global warming target will not be achieved and the planet will continue to heat to dangerous levels, Nadeau warned.
"We do depend on a full and realistic agreement here in Paris, one that can trigger a wide range of measures from governments and public sector… And could lead to substantial decarbonization."
The French capital is currently hosting the 21st UN Climate Change Conference, ending December 11. Some 130 leaders and top diplomats from dozens of countries are expected to reach a legally binding agreement on climate change.
