PARIS (Sputnik) — This year's COP is both known as the 21st session (COP21) to UNFCCC (COP21) and the 11th session of the Conference of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP11).
Heads of state, ministers for the environment and economy, and other delegation heads from almost 200 states will hold a number of joint meetings on Monday and Tuesday.
They are tasked with making national statements and reviewing the draft text of the Paris Climate Agreement, prepared over the past week. The agreement is said to have been distilled from 300 to 21 pages over the course of six years of negotiations.
The agreement on climate change seeks to prevent global warming exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius, as an increase of average global temperatures of 2 degrees or more has been scientifically proven to have disastrous consequences for the planet.
