Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to deepen cooperation between their militaries to avoid conflict incidents amid the situation in Syria.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) – On Monday, Putin and Netanyahu held talks on the sidelines of the Paris climate talks.

"I just had an important talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin. We agreed to deepen the coordination between us in order to prevent mishaps and to do so on a broad basis," Netanyahu said in a statement.

"Tomorrow, senior IDF [Israel Defense Forces] and Russian military officers will meet in order to continue this policy," the Israeli leader said.

Israel was among the first to establish direct lines of communication with Russia to safeguard the respective armed forces from accidental encounters and other dangerous incidents in Syrian airspace.

On Tuesday, a Russian Su-24 Fencer crashed in Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the plane was downed by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet over Syrian territory, falling 2.5 miles from the Turkish border. Putin described the Turkish attack as a "stab in the back" carried out by "accomplices of terrorists."
