Downing of Su-24: Turkish Stab in the Back

The Downing of SU-24: A Turkish Stab in the Back
Subscribe
Russia’s SU-24 was shot down by Turkish F-16 fighter in a move seen as the largest military provocation after the Cold War and a desperate attempt to prevent Russia’s rapprochement with the West.

Turkish officials accused the Russian jet of violating their airspace, alleging that they warned them 10 times over a five-minute period to stop, despite their own radar data indicating that the two supposed violations lasted no more than a handful of seconds each, if they even occurred.

President Putin labeled the attack a – quote – “stab in the back carried out against us by the accomplices of terrorists”, and Prime Minister Medvedev said that Russia has evidence that certain individuals in the Turkish establishment have direct ties to ISIL’s oil smuggling racket.

To discuss this issue in more detail, we are joined by Kyril Koktysh, associate professor at the MGIMO (studio guest); Ali Rizk, independent Middle East expert (Beirut); Evgeny Buzhinsky, lieutenant-general retired (Moscow); and Bilgehan Öztürk, SETA Foundation (Ankara).
