Three Syrian nationals carrying forged passports were arrested and sentenced to a year in prison in central Italy, local media reported Friday.

ROME (Sputnik) – The newspaper cited the three Syrians as saying they arrived 300 miles south of the port town in a shipping container, claiming to have bought the fake documents in Turkey for 1,000 euros ($1,059 at the current exchange rate).

"Three Syrians with false passports were arrested by the railway police in Ancona as they were about to board a 02:45 [01:45 GMT] train for Milan," the regional Corriere Adriatico publication said.

Paris Proposal to Include Free Syrian Army in Anti-ISIL Efforts Baseless

An Italian court has sentenced the Syrian migrants to a year in jail and deportation.

Security measures have been stepped up across Europe after the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group. A forged Syrian passport found near one of the suicide bombers in the French capital reignited fears of extremists infiltrating the hundreds of thousands migrants who have arrived on European shores this year.

European Union external border agency Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri said in September that fake Syrian passports are a black market commodity in Turkey for migrants attempting to reach Europe as refugees.
