A statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on incident with a Russian warplane does not reflect the position of all North Atlantic Council members, a military diplomatic source said Tuesday.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — Following an emergency meeting of the North Atlantic Council requested by Turkey, Stoltenberg offered support for Ankara saying that the allied assessments of the incident were consistent with information provided by Turkey.

"There were serious disagreements during the discussion of the Su-24 incident at the meeting. Some envoys were very cautious and reserved about Turkish complaints," the source close to NATO circles told RIA Novosti.

"That's why NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed reporters with a personal statement as it was not coordinated with all Council members," the source said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Russian Su-24 attack aircraft was downed by a short-range air-to-air missile while carrying out precision strikes against terrorists in northern Syria. The missile was fired by a Turkish F-16 fighter in response to alleged violation of the Turkish airspace by the Russian jet.
