On October 25, parliamentary elections were held in Poland. The right-wing Law and Justice Party won the elections, gaining almost 38 percent of the vote. The party gained 235 seats in the 460-seat Sejm. This is the first time in modern Polish history that a single party has won a majority in parliament sufficient to form a homogeneous government, without have to form a coalition.

The president of Poland appoints the new government within 14 days after the new parliament is convened.

Beata Szydlo became the third female prime minister of Poland. Women in the post previously are Hanna Suchocka, from 1992 and 1993, and Ewa Kopacz, from 2014 and 2015.
