Seoul has offered Pyongyang to restore the inter-Korean railway in hopes that it then will be connected with Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway to Europe.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Seoul has offered Pyongyang to restore the inter-Korean railway in hopes that it then will be connected with Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway to Europe, South Korea’s Ambassador to Russia Park Ro-byug told Sputnik.

"If North Korea takes a positive decision we could continue to rebuild the rest of the line, including the stretch at the demarcation line," Park said.

In August, South Korea began renovating a 7.2-mile stretch of the Gyongwon Line leading up to the military demarcation line.

"A rail connection between North and South, as well as between the inter-Korean railway and the Trans-Siberian Railway would contribute significantly to unifying Eurasia as a continent," the envoy said, adding Pyongyang ought to demonstrate open-mindedness to the connection.

Rail connections between the two Koreas have been severed for 70 years, amid sporadically hostile relations and occasional skirmishes along the demarcation line.

South and North Korea remain legally at war since the 1953 end of the Korean War and the signing of an armistice.
