WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Kerry also told Berdimuhamedow that because of his country’s common border with Afghanistan, there are "a lot of concerns" Washington and Ashgabat would "need to work on together."

Kerry’s remarks came during his first visit as secretary of state to Central Asia where he has met with the leaders of all five regional nations.

"I think that talking about regional security is critical right now," Kerry told his Turkmen counterpart.

The US state secretary noted that energy is a "critical subject when we talk about economic development and the economics of the future."

"I think that we can do more together, frankly, to be able to help your people be able to develop certain skill sets necessary in this modern economy and challenging world that we live in," he added.

The United States has started to build a giant new embassy in Turkmenistan costing $266 million to expand influence in the energy-rich country.
