Hungary has restated a desire to increase two- or threefold the volume of Russian gas stored on its territory, Hungary's Ambassador to Russia Janos Balla said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Balla, Hungary could store over 3 billion of cubic meters of gas.

"We have also looked at the issue of how the Russian side could take part in underground storage being filled up with Russian gas. We made this proposal and hope that the Russian side will show its interest in the process of filling up the underground storage on the basis of commercial cooperation," Balla told RIA Novosti.

"Up to now, 800 million cubic meters have been used up, and we are willing to expand this by two or three times. We are ready for this, and if the Russian side finds this interesting and profitable we have room for storage," Balla said.

Last month, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary was increasing the supply of gas from Russian energy company Gazprom to store in underground facilities in support of energy security.

Currently, Hungary receives most of its gas supplies from Russia via a pipeline transiting Ukraine.
