Hungary Welcomes Law and Justice Victory in Poland Vote

Budapest welcomes the victory of the Law and Justice (PiS) party in Poland’s parliamentary elections, and hopes for successful cooperation with the country on issues that concern Central and Easter European countries, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Polish Law and Justice party won the national parliamentary elections held on Sunday, with 37.58 percent of the vote.

“Hungary is interested in the success of the cooperation of Visegrad Group, therefore we warmly welcome that the winner party shares the same goal. Central and Eastern European countries are facing with similar economic and political challenges. Hungary is always ready to share its experiences with the new Polish Government and we hope Polish-Hungarian cooperation remains successful,” the ministry said in a comment.

The Visegrad Group is an informal grouping of countries that comprises the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

The Law and Justice party supports a greater NATO presence in Poland and has signaled opposition to resettling refugees from the Middle East in the European Union (EU).

On Monday, a Russian lawmaker said the victory of the Law and Justice party is likely to complicate Poland’s relations with other EU members, while Russian-Polish ties, already at a low ebb, will remain the same.
