MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Tens of thousands of migrants on the Croatian-Hungarian border streamed into Slovenia last week after Hungary closed its borders with Croatia on October 16, citing the need to protect the European Union’s frontiers.

According to the RTV Slovenia broadcaster, police reported that some 5,400 migrants were currently staying at two reception centers in eastern Slovenia.

Slovenia has requested financial and material assistance from the European Union to help resolve the migrant crisis.

Earlier in October, Slovenia deployed soldiers to assist police in managing the crowds of migrants moving through the country to northern Europe. The authorities also attempted to put caps on the number of people allowed through border crossings, at no more than 2,500 people daily, but due to the large crowds of migrants stranded on its border with Croatia they had to forego this plan.

Over 710,000 migrants arrived in the European Union within the first nine months of 2015, according to the EU border agency Frontex.
