Russia's anti-submarine destroyer Vice-Admiral Kulakov has left the Northern Fleet's main base in the city of Severomorsk and proceeded to the Atlantic Ocean through the Barents Sea, a fleet spokesman said Friday.

MOSCOW, October 23 (Sputnik) — Serga said the Vice-Admiral Kulakov was famous for performing one of the longest cruises among the ships of the Northern Fleet. In 2014, its crew performed deep-sea tasks in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean over eight and a half months.

"The crew is due to cross the Barents Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The crew will improve its seamanship throughout the journey, and will also conduct a series of naval exercises on various types of ship defense in transit. Ka-27 helicopters' scheduled flights will be performed from the ship," Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga said.

The Vice-Admiral Kulakov, an Udaloy-class destroyer, was commissioned in 1982 and saw duty with the Northern Fleet until March 1991, before undergoing repairs that took 18 years to complete.

The ship returned to the Northern Fleet's main base in the city of Severomorsk in 2010.
