MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Iraq did not give the United States any promises that it would not turn to Russia with a request to conduct airstrikes against the Islamic State, the Iraqi Parliament’s defense committee secretary told Sputnik on Thursday.

“The Iraqi government has not taken on such obligations,” Shahwan Abdallah said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Abadi earlier did not exclude asking Russia to conduct airstrikes against Islamic State positions in the country, which caused concern in the United States. On Tuesday, the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford, said that he had told Baghdad that US officials had convinced the Iraqi prime minister not to cooperate with Russia.
