WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Opponents of the US carbon pollution regulation, the Clean Power Plan rule, will soon be able to take legal action against it, American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity President Mike Duncan said in a statement.
On Friday, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to publish the text of the Clean Power Plan rule in the Federal Register, the official journal of the US government.
“With this action, EPA is finally opening the floodgates for litigation against its deeply flawed, illegal carbon rule,” Duncan said on Thursday. “We are hopeful they [opponents] will be successful and that the courts act quickly and decisively to quash this illegal rule.”
President Obama introduced on August 3 the Clean Power Plan, which targets curbing US power plant carbon pollution by 32 percent in the next 15 years. The plan seeks to heavily regulate coal and other fossil fuel plants, and seeks to shift the focus on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
He said policymakers and elected officials across the Unites States oppose the Clean Power Plan that threatens their constituents, state economies and “the nation as a whole.”
In May, Obama said climate change is an "immediate risk" to the US national security and should be addressed as soon as possible.
The White House has since announced a number of policies that aim at cutting carbon pollution and urging instead increased use of alternative energy sources.
