Taliban Takes Over UK Stronghold in Afghanistan

Taliban militants have seized a former UK base in Afghanistan.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Taliban militants have seized a former UK base in the capital of the Afghan province of Helmand causing civilians to flee the city, The Telegraph reported.

Lashkar Gah, which was the base of UK aid and reconstruction efforts for eight years, has been "under serious military pressure", according to a local official.

The Afghan Interior Ministry sent additional military forces to the region, the newspaper said on Tuesday.

The heavy fighting in Lashkar Gah comes a year after UK troops withdrew from the country.

On September 29, Taliban captured the Afghan city of Kunduz with Afghan forces still struggling to fully retake control of the city.

The US-led NATO mission formally ended its operation in Afghanistan in December 2014 after a long presence in the country since 2001.

In recent months, the Afghan government has been faced with a resurgent Taliban and the spread of Islamic State extremists in to several provinces.
