Three Turkish soldiers and 17 Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants died in clashes in the southeast province of Hakkari, the Turkish General Staff said Saturday.

ANKARA (Sputnik) – It added that 17 "terrorists" have been killed in ongoing shootouts.

"On October 17, 2015, three soldiers have been killed and one critically injured in the Daglica region in an operation; additionally, six soldiers have been wounded," the General Staff said in a statement.

Previous reports claimed armed militants attacked the Hakkari airport building, but law enforcement officials guarding the building thwarted their advance.

Tensions in Turkey escalated in mid-summer when the country launched a military campaign against PKK in northern Iraq, after the militant group claimed responsibility for the murders of two Turkish police officers who they claim had aligned themselves with Islamic State.
