Nationwide protests against poverty and the US-EU Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) free trade deal were held on Saturday in more than 50 Spanish cities, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

MADRID (Sputnik) — The accord's stated goal is to ease the flow of goods and services across the Atlantic. The pact seeks to create the world's largest free trade zone, encompassing over 60 percent of global production.

According to local police, about 1,500 attended the demonstration in Madrid alone, whereas the organizers claim there were several thousand of participants in the capital city.

The Spanish activists chanted such slogans as "People of the planet above the multinational corporations," "No to the poverty and inequality," "No to the TTIP."

The TTIP is beneficial only for the elites and serves exclusively the interests of large transnational corporations, incurring damage to small companies, consumers, traders and the general public and widening inequality gap, the manifesto, which was read to the participants at the end of the rally, said.

About 1,300 different rights groups and trade unions supported the demonstration, including the Campaign against TTIP, the Spanish Alliance against Poverty, the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the Workers' Commissions (CCOO).

In April, the anti-TTIP rally in Madrid was attended by about 50,000 Spaniards, becoming the largest of the kind in Europe.

Last week, over 100,000 rallied in Berlin, Germany to protest the TTIP free trade agreement.
