Turkey Downs Unidentified Aircraft on Border With Syria - General Staff

According to Turkey's General Staff, an unidentified aircraft has been downed by the country's forces for violating its airspace.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Turkey has shot down an unidentified aircraft in its airspace near the border with Syria, Turkey's General Staff said Friday.

"Today, in our country's airspace near the Syrian border, an unknown aircraft was detected. Though warned three times, it continued its flight. After this, our border patrol planes, following rules of engagement, opened fire and shot down the aircraft," the General Staff said in a statement.

The downed aircraft was a drone, according to the NTV channel, citing a military source.

The aircraft wreckage has been found, the media reported.

All Russian aircraft operating in Syria have returned to the airbase on Friday, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russian jets commenced precision airstrikes against IS targets in Syria on September 30, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.
