The countries involved in negotiating the Iran nuclear agreement must regroup with the objective of defeating the Islamic State, former lead Iran negotiator and EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, Germany and Iran successfully concluded a historic nuclear arms deal in mid-July, despite historic tensions among many of the negotiating parties.

"We have to go back and to use the P5+1, with the European Union, to get the parameters of a negotiated agreement… and that negotiation has to be a commitment to go and fight against ISIS [Islamic State]," Solana told Sputnik on Thursday.

In a Thursday speech at the Brookings Institution, Solana noted the international community must "put the same energy" into fighting the war against the Islamic State, as it put into concluding the Iran nuclear deal.

The Islamic State has grown into a regional menace with global outreach as the terrorist group captured vast areas of land in Syria and Iraq and declared a caliphate there. US intelligence has estimated that nearly 30,000 foreign fighters have joined the Islamic State.

Prior to assuming the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy position, Solana served as NATO Secretary General from 1995 to 1999.
