On Monday, an investigation by The Guardian revealed that the US government is deporting undocumented immigrants back to Central America, where many face immediate threats of violence and death, and some have been killed shortly after their return.
"It is shameful that some people are murdered after being deported back to their homelands, but being deported is not the reason they are murdered. If they return to areas known for criminal activity, then, of course they risk the unfortunate consequences of coming between a rabid gangster and his gun," Gilchrist said.
Gilchrist blamed what he called the "sinister and morally cheap mentalities" of US politicians for allegedly misleading the public on issues of immigration.
"They have never been interested in the betterment of our nation and its society. They have only been interested in plundering a very naive public to further their own agenda of retaining power and control over our political system and our citizens," he said.
On Tuesday, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Sputnik that the United States would not give refuge to undocumented immigrants seeking protection from crime-related violence.
In November 2014, President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order to protect up to five million undocumented immigrants from deportation and grant them the right to obtain work permits in the United States.
