The US Navy’s Europe and Africa operational fleet announced that the United States will hold joint anti-submarine exercises with Romania in the Black Sea.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The United States will hold joint anti-submarine exercises with Romania in the Black Sea, the US Navy’s Europe and Africa operational fleet announced.

“Constantly improving and exercising our anti-submarine warfare capabilities with NATO allies such as Romania is a priority for our fleet and the Alliance,” commander of the 6th Fleet Task Force 67, Capt. Bryan Durkee, said late Sunday.

Romania, a NATO member since 2004, is among several Eastern European and Baltic nations seeking greater US presence in missile technology and expanded military exercises.

The Navy’s P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft arrived in the coastal Romanian city of Constanta earlier to take part in the drills scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday.

“Dedicating our aircraft to train with allies in the Black Sea and other partners represents an enduring mission for 6th Fleet,” Durkee stressed.

Land-based maritime patrol aircraft, including the P-3C Orion, operate as part of the Task Force 67 in anti-submarine, reconnaissance, surveillance and mining capacities.
