The Russian policy in the Middle East is diminishing US influence in the region, US retired general and military analyst Jack Keane said.

The statement was made on the buildup in the relations between Moscow and Tehran.

"The alliance with Iran is absolute game-changer and the strategic implications of it are very significant. It will impact every country in the region who will now begin to have relationships with Russia as opposed to the long-standing relationships they had with the US," the general said.

He added that the US will remain a player in the region.

"But our role in the Middle East is about to be diminished significantly," he pointed out.

According to Keane, it is obvious that Russian President Vladimir Putin considers NATO allies along Russia’s borders as a threat for Russia. He said that the ultimate goal of Putin’s policy is to break up NATO.

Earlier, during testimony in the Senate, the general blamed Russia for waging a proxy war against the US in Syria.

Earlier, he also said the US strategy in Syria was poor, and supported the Russian airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIL) militants in Syria.
However, as he added, the US should also be involved in the operation.

The American approach in Syria has not been that effective, and if the US continues to use this strategy it would lose, the general told Fox News.

On September 30, Russia launched airstrikes against ISIL facilities in Syria. The operation was request by the Syrian government. It has involved Su-25 ground attack jets, Su-24M and Su-34 attack aircraft, and Su-30SM jet fighters. The US-led coalition launched anti-ISIL airstrikes in Syria in September 2014 without authorization from the UN Security Council and the Syrian government.
