US Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) is tracking any potential cyberthreats from Russia in the Syrian battlespace as a matter of policy, CYBERCOM Deputy Commander Lt. General James McLaughlin said on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — McLaughlin did not comment specifically on whether the information environment in Syria has changed as a result of Russia entering the fight against the Islamic State in Syria.

"If there are any players that are potential threats or are bringing capability that would cause us concern there [in Syria], we will track them to a high level of detail," McLaughlin said during a Center for Strategic and International Studies conference on the US military in cyberspace.

He noted that in Syria, CYBERCOM is focused on understanding the threat any actor might pose to US networks or force "and that we are ready to defend against it or deal with it."

Russia has advanced cyber capabilities and is in the process of training and fielding cyberwarfare units by 2017 to defend Russian networks.
