Speaking in the southern German town of Passau on Thursday, Juncker stated that Russia should be treated decently, whereas Brussels must restore a "practical relationship" with Moscow as although the United States may have its own take on the matter, the European Union must prioritize its own interests.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – There is nothing new about European Commission (EC) President Jean-Claude Juncker's recent statement on EU-Russia relations as it is fully in line with the European Union’s stance on bilateral ties, the EC chief spokesman said Friday.

"President Juncker and the Juncker Commission is fully aware of the decisions of the European Union vis-a-vis Russia and fully abides and works with EU member-states in this framework of policy, which is given," Margaritis Schinas said at a press briefing, answering a question on whether Juncker’s remark can be regarded as a reason for lifting the anti-Russia sanctions.

The European Union imposed a series of sanctions against Russia in 2014 – later extending them for another year – over its supposed involvement in the Ukrainian conflict. Moscow resolutely denies the allegations.

In response to the Western restrictive measures, Russia announced in August 2014 a one-year food embargo on products originating in states that imposed the anti-Russia sanctions, which was later extended until August 2016.
