Thirty-nine people were taken to the hospital and 65 were treated on site in the Lebanese capital of Beirut overnight after a protest against trash dumps in the city escalated to clashes with security forces, the Lebanese Red Cross said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Red Cross head George Kettaneh said none of those hospitalized had life-threatening injuries, according to the National News Agency.

Security forces reportedly used water cannons and tear gas to disperse dozens of protesters who gathered overnight in downtown Beirut. Clashes erupted after police barricaded the road to the Lebanese parliament building and the central Martyrs' Square.

Demonstrations started in Beirut in July after the government had failed to move huge garbage piles from the city streets.
