US-Led Coalition Launches 24 Airstrikes Against ISIL in Syria, Iraq

According to the US Combined Joint Task Force, coalition military forces conducted seven airstrikes in Syria and 17 in Iraq.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition launched a total of 24 airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Syria and Iraq targeting militants’ fighting positions, tactical units and weapon caches, the US Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) announced in a statement on Tuesday.

"In Syria, coalition military forces conducted seven strikes using bomber, fighter, and remotely piloted aircraft," CJTF-OIR said. "Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 17 strikes coordinated with and in support of the Government of Iraq."

In Syria, the US-led coalition launched airstrikes against vehicle borne improvised explosive device, several buildings, a crude oil collection point as well as tactical units and mortar positions.

Meanwhile in Iraq, the coalition struck IS bunkers, homemade explosive facilities, tactical units and blocked access to their terrain.

The US-led coalition of some 60 nations have conducted over 6,500 airstrikes in Iraq since August 2014, and in Syria since September 2014, albeit without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian government.

On September 30, Russia started precision airstrikes on IS targets in Syria, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.

On Monday, Russian combat aircraft carried out 15 sorties in Syria, striking 10 IS targets in various parts of the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Tuesday that Russia is ready to use information obtained by the US-led coalition to fight the Islamic State in Syria.
