Portugal Alliance Coalition Fails to Win Absolute Parliamentary Majority
MADRID (Sputnik) On Sunday, a coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PSD) led by Coelho and the Democratic and Social Center – People’s Party (CDS-PP) headed by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Paulo Portas won the election with 36.83 percent of the vote.

"These elections have determined a winning political power – a coalition that I have an honor of heading together with Paulo Portas," the Portuguese Diario de Noticias newspaper said.

He added that the coalition would start negotiations over the formation of the government in near future.

Earlier, Antonio Costa, the leader of the opposition Socialist Party (PS) that finished second with 32.38 percent of the vote, said he would not form a coalition with other Spanish leftist political parties.

The Portuguese parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, has 230 seats, with members elected for four-year terms. For the last four years, the coalition between PSD and CDS-PP has been holding 132 seats in the Assembly, followed by the PS with 74 seats.
