After several days of clashes between the Afghan military forces and the Taliban extremists, the army managed to regain the northern city of Kunduz on Thursday, the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Afghanistan continues to be in a state of political and social turmoil, with the Taliban movement redoubling their insurgency across the country.
The Taliban military movement launched a large-scale offensive in April, despite continuous attempts by the Afghan government to resume peace talks. In May, the militants surrounded the city of Kunduz.
According to local authorities, Islamic State jihadists are also active in Afghanistan, trying to take advantage of the current instability to gain a foothold in the country.
