Switzerland committed new funds to strengthen humanitarian efforts in countries in the Middle East supporting the vast outflow of Syrian refugees, Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter told Sputnik.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The critical focus of Switzerland’s efforts is to "help and support countries like Lebanon and Jordan."

"Switzerland has decided some days ago to scale up the amount of money for humanitarian needs very swiftly before the winter," Burkhalter said on Monday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Lebanon is currently hosting more than 1.1 million refugees from regional conflicts in the Middle East. Jordan has more than 600,000 refugees living within its borders.

According to United Nations estimates, there are more than 6 million refugees across the globe, many having fled their homes as a result of the conflict in Syria in Iraq.

Europe has been struggling with a major migrant crisis amid a massive influx of refugees from the Middle East and Africa.
