A pipeline project to transport natural gas from the Caspian, East Mediterranean and Middle East areas to Italy and Europe through Turkey and Greece remains on the table, just like the one to pump Russian gas to Europe, Greek ex-Economic Minster said on Friday.

Russia Expects Prompt Restart of Talks on Turkish Stream Gas Pipeline
The project was discussed during talks with Russia on building a gas pipeline from Russia to Central Europe, said Panagiotis Lafazanis, the leader of the newly-formed Popular Unity Party and an active proponent of the project.

When asked if the construction of the pipeline from Greece to Italy, also known as Poseidon, was still an option, Lafazanis said: “Of course. It is a very good project and, as far as I know, the Italians think so too. The project is vital for entire Europe and I hope that they will see it through because if they don’t this would be bad for all of us in Europe.”

As to the Russian pipeline, it will run to Turkey, Greece and further on to Central Europe and preferably also to Italy, Lafazanis said.

“This would connect Russia with southern Europe and ensure secure and stable supplies at an affordable price,” he added.

"Russia is an important part of Europe and it cannot and should not be isolated. The sanctions imposed on Russia are bad for all Europeans and they must end. We need good relations with Russia and we must expands them as much as we possibly can,” Panagiotis Lafazanis said in conclusion.
