Serbia Appreciates Russian Assistance Amid Migrant Crisis – Ambassador

Subscribe
Belgrade is thankful to Moscow for providing aid to help the country's authorities amid the unraveling migrant crisis, Serbian Ambassador to Russia Slavenko Terzic said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The ambassador said that the tents, blankets, heaters and water barrels delivered by Russia would be enough to accommodate between 800 and a thousand migrants in the country.

“Serbia is grateful to Russia, which is helping us in deeds, not in words,” Terzic told journalists.

Europe has been beset by a refugee crisis, with thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing to Europe, to escape the violence and poverty in their home countries. Many of them use Serbia as a transit zone to enter the bloc and travel to wealthy EU states where they intend to apply for asylum.

In August, Hungary completed the construction of a 108-mile fence on the country’s border with Serbia to curb the influx of migrants.

Earlier in September, the Hungarian government passed new border legislation, introducing tougher penalties such as detention or deportation for illegally crossing the border or damaging the border fence.

Last week, the European Commission estimated the number of migrants who had arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015 at over 500,000.
