Over 213,000 people applied for asylum in the European Union in the second quarter of 2015, exceeding the number from the same period last year by 85 percent, EU statistical information agency Eurostat said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A third of the asylum seekers are from Syria and Afghanistan, according to the statistics office.

Germany received 38 percent of all asylum applications between April and June, followed by Hungary with 15 percent and Austria with 8 percent, Eurostat said.

Hungary received the highest number of applications relative to the country’s population with 3,317 asylum requests per million people, according to the data, followed by Austria and Sweden.

The fresh data shows constant growth for asylum application figures, surpassing the first quarter of 2015 by 15 percent, Eurostat said.

In recent weeks, many European states have reinforced their borders, while some, including Germany, have instated increasingly strict border controls to counter an enormous influx of refugees.
