NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — India has summoned the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the country to ask for cooperation in investigating rape allegations against a senior Saudi diplomat, accused of committing the offense on the outskirts of New Delhi, the Indian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

“MEA [Ministry of External Affairs] Chief of Protocol called in Saudi Amb [Ambassador] today, conveyed request of Haryana Police for coopn [cooperation] of Embassy in the case of 2 Nepali citizens,” spokesman for the Indian Foreign Ministry Vikas Swarup wrote on his Twitter.

On Wednesday, the Indian Foreign Ministry confirmed to Sputnik that it had received a report on a Saudi diplomat suspected of raping two Nepali women, reportedly found in the unnamed diplomat’s residence in the city Gurgaon near New Delhi, on Monday.

The alleged perpetrator of the crime, the first secretary of the Saudi Embassy in New Delhi, has diplomatic immunity and therefore does not fall under Indian jurisdiction.

Earlier on Thursday, General Secretary of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Devi Prasad Tripathi told Sputnik that a thorough probe into the case was necessary, despite the suspect's immunity.
