MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Some 55 percent of Greeks said the adoption of the euro in 2001 has harmed Greece, while only 34 percent said that the move benefited the country.
According to the poll, conducted from May 14 until June 16, Greeks believe that the transition has contributed to the country’s economic recession and the growth of unemployment rates.
The Gallup poll also revealed that the majority of Greeks say that the country’s membership in the European Union is beneficial, while only 35 percent said that they would be better off outside the bloc.
Greece is currently struggling with a severe economic crisis, trying to repay its multi-billion debt to international creditors, including the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and several Eurozone countries.
In August, Athens and the Eurogroup agreed on a third bailout package for the country, enabling Greece to remain in the Eurozone.
