Eurostar Unwilling to Disclose Losses From Migrant Disruptions

The losses inflicted by the railway traffic disruptions due to the migrant crisis will be kept secret.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — The cross-channel train operator Eurostar will not reveal information about the extent of the losses caused by the disruptions to railway traffic between Britain and France amid the migrant crisis, a spokesman with the company told Sputnik Wednesday.

“We would not be able to say that, it is too early. And we would not give that out anyway,” Rob Haycocks said.

Five trains were halted late on Tuesday on both sides of the tunnel under the English Channel when several people were discovered on the tracks not far from the French city of Calais, where a large refugee camp housing thousands of immigrants is located.

The spokesman said that the service returned to its normal operating schedule on Wednesday, although two trains were cancelled “just to help the operations run as smoothly as possible but only because those passengers had already been rebooked onto other trains.”

The Channel Tunnel has been hit by a spate of traffic disruptions in the past two months due to repeated attempts by undocumented migrants to climb onto cargo trucks destined for Britain.

The Eurotunnel security service has intercepted 37,000 attempts by migrants to reach Britain from France since the beginning of the year, according to the tunnel's train-operator.
