The European Commission has allocated 5.2 million euro ($5.8 million) to provide undocumented migrants currently residing in the northern French port city of Calais with necessary humanitarian assistance, the Commission said in a statement on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the statement, the funds will be used "to set up a tent site offering humanitarian assistance to around 1,500 illegal migrants residing in the area surrounding the day center 'Jules Ferry' and to support the transport of asylum seekers from Calais to other locations in France."

"Calais can and should be an example of how durable and courageous solutions can form this European response, addressing the challenge from all angles. We must act with humanity towards those in need of our protection, with solidarity and responsibility towards fellow European countries and with rigor in the application of our common EU rules,” European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said, as quoted in the statement.

Security Stepped Up in Calais While UK and France Continue to Squabble
On August 17, France requested additional funding from the European Commission under an accelerated procedure to resolve the refugee crisis in Calais where an estimated 3,500 to 5,000 migrants are currently camped.

The migrant camps are situated close to the new Jules Ferry facility, the first institution in the city to provide shelter to migrants after the closure of the Sangatte refugee camp in 2002. The Jules Ferry facility can host up to 2,500 migrants at one time.
